In a fast-paced power escalation anime/manga series like Dragon Ball, it’s no surprise that its creator, Akira Toriyama, must innovate ways not only to power up his cast of heroes but also to leave an indelible mark in the readers’ hearts. Hence, transformations become a logical choice, with some characters evolving into truly unique forms. Beast Gohan is a prime example.
Contrary to other Saiyan descendants on Earth, Gohan hasn’t been focusing on his “Super Saiyan” form. Many believed he had reached his power’s limit. However, in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, he unlocked a new state known as “Gohan Beast.” But what’s the origin and power of this form? Let’s delve deeper!
Origin Beast Gohan
In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Gohan expressed his ambition to achieve a “never-before-seen ultimate form.” In the manga, during his battle against Kefla, he revealed his goal to evolve “as an Earthling, not as a Saiyan.” This is why he ceased using the Super Saiyan form even before the Tournament of Power began.
The origin of “Beast” doesn’t stem from any Saiyan transformation, but rather from “Senzai Nouryoku Kaihou” (Hidden Potential Release) – Gohan’s ultimate state during the Buu Saga. Unlike transformations, “Senzai Nouryoku Kaihou” derives its power from unlocking one’s full potential, removing all previous limits. By harnessing this power naturally, transformations become obsolete.
The level of “Senzai Nouryoku Kaihou” surpasses that of Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 and Super Buu, making Gohan the most powerful being on Earth at that time. However, due to pursuing an academic path and neglecting regular training, Gohan’s strength gradually waned. Consequently, he had to revert to using the Super Saiyan form he used before, but this power level was now insufficient.
Realizing the need for strength to protect everyone, Gohan diligently trained with Piccolo, regaining his lost power and becoming a pivotal force in Universe 7’s victories during the Tournament of Power. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, after witnessing Piccolo apparently defeated by Cell Max, Gohan erupted in anger and, tapping into “Senzai Nouryoku Kaihou,” he achieved the “Beast” state.
Appearance Beast Gohan
In his “Beast” form, Gohan’s hair resembles his initial transformation into Super Saiyan 2 but with a silver hue instead of gold. His eyebrows turn silver, and his eyes take on a fiery red hue. The outer aura retains its bright cyan glow, enveloping an inner magenta aura with streaks of lightning. Overall, this design reflects the innovation seen in Dragon Ball Super while also incorporating details reminiscent of the Cell Games Saga.
Power Beast Gohan
“Beast” represents the most potent form Gohan can attain, surpassing most known transformation forms and solidifying his status as one of the strongest individuals in Universe 7. With this power, he utterly dominated Cell Max – a creature engineered from Cell’s data with several technological enhancements within its body. Consequently, Cell Max is a substantial upgrade over Cell and naturally far stronger than the “original.”
In terms of ranking, Cell Max is believed to be so powerful that if he were to reach full potential, even Broly would struggle against him. Despite being activated prematurely, his strength still left Gohan and Piccolo questioning whether Goku and Vegeta could defeat him. Notably, the only aspect that remained “incomplete” in Cell Max was his mentality, not his strength.
Gohan’s Progression of Power in Dragon Ball Super
Gohan, the son of Goku and Chi Chi, is the elder brother of Son Goten and the first Earth-born Saiyan hybrid. He stands as one of the mightiest warriors in the Dragon Ball series, having achieved three formidable power levels: Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Mystic. Most recently, he unveiled his newest transformation, Gohan Beast.
Super Saiyan
Gohan achieved this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. During the Cell Games, he even surpassed his father’s strength in the Super Saiyan Full-Power state.
However, seven years later, due to a lack of training, Gohan’s power waned. His strength gradually returned as he prepared for the martial arts tournament.
Super Saiyan 2 (SSJ2)
Gohan also attained this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but he struggled to sustain it for extended periods. During the Cell Games, his transformation into SSJ2 was triggered by his anger when Cell killed Android 16.
Seven years later, due to a lack of training, Gohan’s SSJ2 form had significantly weakened. He still employed this state during the martial arts tournament, the Buu Saga, and the first half of the Dragon Ball Super series.
Mystic Gohan
Gohan unlocked his latent power, resulting in this state, which surpassed the power of both Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 and the regular Super Buu.
Gohan utilized this state to face Beerus but ultimately lost it due to his prolonged period of non-training.
Subsequently, in Dragon Ball Super, Piccolo aided Gohan in regaining the Ultimate state with even greater power, surpassing Super Saiyan God and battling Super Saiyan Blue Goku on equal footing. Goku had to resort to Blue Kaioken to defeat him.
Most recently, in the film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, both Gohan and Piccolo discover their immense power potential. However, throughout the film, there was no official explanation for Gohan’s new state, and it was not given an official name.
Nevertheless, according to sources like ScreenRant, this state could potentially be referred to as “Gohan Beast.”
Gohan Beast
This state represents Gohan’s latest transformation, considered to be the evolution of the Mystic form.
In this form, Gohan possesses a pale complexion, hair that stands upright, appearing much longer and sharper than in his base forms, along with fierce and savage red eyes.
How powerful is Beast Gohan?
Throughout the course of Dragon Ball’s development, we’ve witnessed Goku and Vegeta push their limits time and again to achieve entirely new states of power. However, for someone hailed as a genius like Gohan, it took until the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero for him to possess a new power state called “Beast.” So, just how formidable is this state that it took the Dragon Ball creator four years to create it? Let’s explore the answer together.
It can be said that, at the current juncture, Beast stands as Son Gohan’s ultimate power state. This is why this form can contend with, and even defeat, some of the most formidable characters in the Dragon Ball world. The primary evidence for this is the main antagonist of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Cell Max.
At that time, with Goku and Vegeta away on Beerus’s planet, Cell Max was depicted as the most powerful being on Earth. Despite the terrifying description, in the final stages of the showdown between Gohan Beast and Cell Max, Goku’s son was able to unleash a Masenko blast that rivaled an enormous energy beam from his adversary. Surprisingly, this diminutive Masenko was powerful enough to obliterate Cell Max entirely.
Not only did Cell Max pose a formidable challenge, but creator Akira Toriyama himself confirmed that Gohan Beast is on par, if not stronger, than Goku and Vegeta. After the battle with Cell Max in the recent movie, Piccolo delivered a line suggesting that even Goku and Vegeta would have difficulties fighting the monstrous Cell Max. From this, it can be inferred that Gohan Beast is at least as powerful as, if not surpassing, the Super Saiyan Blue state combined with a 20x Kaioken, or even on par with Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta.
Another warrior we can compare to Gohan Beast is Broly. In the Broly movie, we witnessed Broly easily overpowering Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. They had to fuse into Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to stand a chance against him. Therefore, it’s conceivable that Gohan Beast could hold his own against Broly. However, if Broly were to access his Legendary Super Saiyan form, he would undoubtedly outmatch Gohan Beast.
