In chapter 1071 of One Piece, the fan-favorite rebel, Sabo, fulfilled a noble duty. He released Bartholomew Kuma from being held under the control of the World Government and the Navy. The force was attempting to take away not only his freedom but also his nobility and compassion. Upon regaining consciousness, however, Kuma quickly returned for something important. It can be speculated that maybe something more was at stake than just his own life – perhaps someone more dear to him was in need of assistance. Unfortunately, it remains a mystery until the next chapter what this special mission may be.

Kuma’s arrival at Mariejois in In One Piece chapter 1071 was, to say the least, a shocking sight. To think that a revolutionary officer like Kuma, who had just been freed from captivity by Sabo and company, would rush towards the area immediately after his liberation seemed almost too unbelievable and yet there he was – rushing right towards Red Port without batting an eye. The Navy knew they were in trouble and sent out an emergency evacuation as they understood Kuma was no ordinary threat, while ordinary citizens took notice of the scene with horror and fled in search of safety. Much remains to be seen about why Kuma has made it their mission to arrive at the gate of Mariejois but for many fans of One Piece this is one of the more exciting developments to happen so far – certainly one worth keeping an eye on!
All the information about Kuma has just stopped there without any further explanation. However, some predictions may be made to consider why Kuma decided to do so. Most likely, Kuma’s goal is to be somewhere in Mariejois, where he was once held as a slave of the Heavenly Dragon. The purpose of this, however, is unclear as Kuma does not mention anything about the issue to his trusted revolutionary forces including Monkey D. Dragon, Sabo, Ivankov and others.
In recent chaps, fans have learned more about Kuma through Vegapunk. Specifically, in conversation with Boney, Kuma’s daughter, Vegapunk admitted that it was impossible to turn Kuma back but that there was a way to help him, so it is likely that Kuma’s return to Mariejois was related to Boney or at least a program that was programmed by Vegapunk when he was Pacifista.
Elsewhere, Luffy and Vegapunk have just formed a temporary alliance, so it’s possible that Kuma went to Mariejois to help Vegapunk. It’s possible that Kuma is aiming for the giant straw hat hidden here, which fans saw in a brief scene involving Im-sama. The fact that Luffy has achieved Gear 5 status could make him big enough to own this straw hat and know the secret that the world government is hiding.
Another possible target might be the “secret treasure of Mariejois” that Doflamingo mentions in the Dressrosa section. What this treasure is is yet to be revealed, but if Doflamingo says that it needs the Ope-Ope devil fruit to activate, Vegapunk may be the only one who has an alternative to find its truth.
Note that all of the above is also hypothetical from the information obtained throughout One Piece. To find out why Kuma is returning to Mariejois, fans will have to wait for more answers.
