1- Shounen Maid

Shounen Maid is an anime that goes beyond the superficial surface of its genre. It delivers a heart-warming story of an abandoned boy who has to overcome adversity and find the courage and strength to move forward in life. The anime features themes such as grief, acceptance, family and belonging, which are showcased through its portrayal of Chihiro’s struggles. Despite these darker themes, the show still manages to effectively evoke joy through its lighthearted moments when Chihiro interacts with his new family of misfits. Through discovering this newfound bond and love, Shounen Maid also teaches viewers valuable lessons on overcoming hardship while embracing life’s precious blessings.
2 – R-15

Takuto Akutagawa, from the controversial anime “xxxHolic,” does have a strange and perverse talent for writing pornographic novels. But that’s not all, as there is much more to this anime than its dubious premise. School shenanigans ensue as Takuto attempts to use his “dirty” porn talent to shake things up at school in all sorts of ways. Despite this seemingly depraved and shallow set-up though, “xxxHolic” manages to go deeper by mixing lighthearted school love stories with a funny shota character that serves to amplify the show’s comedic elements. All of these elements combine to create an anime with plenty of comedic zest, but also a surprisingly strong emotional core that stimulates debates among fan communities around the world.
3 – Kyousougiga

Rie Matsumoto’s directorial debut anime, Kyousougiga, offers a truly unique premise and visual experience. Koto and his two younger siblings are trying to find their way out of the strange city of Kyoto, which is not the real Kyoto they live in day-to-day. To escape this unfamiliar parallel world, they must find a rabbit that can take them back to their own reality. Furthermore, they soon discover they can only connect to this strange place through one martial artist, one cleric or even a demon. From the onset, Kyousougiga may appear like any other anime series but delving deeper will reveal an array of exciting surprises; combining surreal artistry with captivating emotions. Whether you’re a fan of anime or simply looking for something different, be sure to give Kyousougiga a viewing. You won’t regret it!
4 – Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

While the summary of The Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge anime can initially lead viewers to think it’s a lighthearted and funny show, it actually has more action-packed and darker moments. This is a fantastic choice if you enjoy mystery, thriller, and fantasy genres but with a dystopian edge. Hiri Haimura runs into Iwai Mushanokouji, whose hair is known as the ‘Hair Queen’ and puts an end to her cursed hair with the powerful ‘Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge’ scissors. This unravels much deeper challenges for the two characters that involve mysterious killers armed with deadly tools which further adds to the overall plot of “darkness” in this anime.
5 – B Gata H Kei

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, anime based on the manga of the same name, is an interesting combination of romance and humor. Though its perverted summary may lead one to believe it’s hentai, that’s not really the case. Instead, Yamada-kun is a fun retelling of a stereotypical schoolgirl’s journey as she innocently explores her first love with plenty of hapless hijinks along the way. Through comedic misadventures and awkward situations alike, we learn how to cope with various aspects of adolescent romance in a lighthearted manner. Therefore, for anyone who likes honest portrayals of teenage relationships within a fun package, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches is definitely worth checking out – despite its rather depraved summary!
6 – Mitsudomoe

If you were to hear that the setting of an anime series is an elementary school classroom, you’d probably think of a children’s show full of innocent fun. However, this particular anime is anything but innocent as it belongs to the ecchi genre! Though it focuses more on humor than outright suggestive content, the juxtaposition between its young protagonists and its suggestive themes can lead some viewers to believe that its author must be quite perverted. However, in spite of this odd combination of elements, the anime is beloved by fans and critics alike. In fact, it has even been voted by Japanese fans as the funniest anime from the start of the 21st century so far! This speaks volumes about the series’ ability to successfully combine inappropriate adult humor with childhood innocence.
7 – Nazo no Kanojo X

Despite how bizarre and gross the synopsis of this anime may sound, it has much more to offer beyond this initial description. The show’s weirdness is certainly one of its selling points as its story may be genuinely shocking at times and difficult to predict. And yet, this strangeness actually serves a purpose as it expands viewers’ horizons and encourages them to think from different angles. One thing’s for sure though: you could never call this anime dull or boring! It certainly removes preconceived notions about what can make good TV – proving that strange can be good too!
8 – Inu X Boku SS

When I encounter images of “Inu X Boku SS”, the first thing that often comes to mind is the manga series “Kamisama Kiss” released a year prior. However, when watching “Inu X Boku SS” it becomes clear that it differs greatly from its predecessor. With a light-hearted tone and clever humor, the relationships between characters progresses slowly rather than at a breakneck speed like many other romantic comedies. The supporting roles in this anime further contribute to the humorous nature of the show, thus making this duo a very different set than what most people expect them to be.
9 – Hunter X Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is an anime adaptation of the original manga by Yoshihiro Togashi that is a must-watch for any fan of the action genre. With its two main characters, Gon and Killua, in the shape of adorable children, viewers are surprised to discover how exciting the series really is. Right from its debut episodes, Hunter x Hunter ensures viewers a thrilling ride. Filled with fierce battles, victories and defeats, joy and pain, this anime truly brings out all aspects of the action genre making it hard to believe that you wouldn’t want to watch it. If you are ignoring this classic animated series – it’s definitely worth a try!
